AVIGNON, France — Dominique Pelicot, 72, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for drugging and raping his ex-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, and facilitating her abuse by dozens of men over nearly a decade.
The court in Avignon found Pelicot guilty of multiple charges, including the attempted aggravated rape of another woman and the creation of indecent images involving minors.
Pelicot, who admitted to the charges, stood trial alongside 50 other men, many of whom denied their involvement in the crimes.
Of the co-defendants, 47 were convicted of rape, two of attempted rape, and two of sexual assault.
A Decade of Abuse
The court heard that Pelicot routinely drugged his ex-wife and orchestrated the abuse by inviting other men, some of whom he had filmed committing the assaults.
Among the convicted were men from diverse professions, including firefighters, lorry drivers, soldiers, and even a journalist.
The crimes came to light in 2020 after Pelicot was caught upskirting at a supermarket, leading investigators to uncover a trove of incriminating evidence.

The convicted men have 10 days to appeal their sentences.
Pelicot, the central figure in the crimes, admitted to his actions but offered no significant defence during the trial.
Authorities continue to investigate the whereabouts of Hassan Ouamou, 30, who was convicted in absentia and is believed to have fled to Morocco.
Legal and Social Impact
The case has underscored the necessity of vigilance against systemic abuse and the importance of support systems for survivors.
Advocates have called for stricter monitoring and legal reform to prevent similar cases in the future.
“This trial is a grim reminder of the depths of human depravity,” said one legal expert. “But it also highlights the resilience of survivors who come forward to seek justice.”
The convictions mark the conclusion of one of the most extensive and harrowing criminal trials in recent French history, leaving an indelible mark on the justice system and the communities involved.
