Four-year old boy named Gideon got drowned in a river on Sunday, June 1, 2014 in Atikeke community of Gaa-Akanbi area, Ilorin, Kwara State on his way to church with his grandmother.
According to an eyewitness present at the scene, the victim had mistakenly slipped into the water when they got to a narrow path where steel was laid across the river for passersby to cross.
The source said: “I saw them when they were coming; I was on the other side of the river.
“The old woman had waited at the other side for her grandchildren to pass , but the boy in front of all of them fell inside the fast flowing river.
“I think the steel was slippery due to the early morning rain,”
The deceased grandmother while narrating the sad incident to pressmen wept uncontrollably for the death of her grandson saying: “When my grandson slipped inside the river, he was calling my name.”
However, police public relations Officer, Kwara Police command, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi said he was yet to be briefed about the incident.
