LUXEMBOURG, Luxembourg — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., was admitted to a hospital in Luxembourg on Friday, December 13, 2024, following an injury sustained during a congressional delegation (CODEL) trip marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” Ian Krager, a spokesperson for Pelosi’s congressional office, said in a statement.
Pelosi, 84, is reportedly continuing to work from the hospital, despite her injury, and expressed regret at missing the remainder of the delegation’s activities.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi conveys her thanks and praise to our veterans and gratitude to the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe,” Krager wrote.
Details about the nature of Pelosi’s injury and the expected duration of her hospital stay have not been disclosed.
However, Krager noted that she “looks forward to returning home to the U.S. soon.”
The injury occurred during Pelosi’s visit to honour the courage of American servicemembers who fought in one of World War II’s pivotal battles.
Pelosi, a long-serving member of the House first elected in 1987, remains an influential figure in Democratic politics.
This incident comes shortly after outgoing Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, 82, also sustained injuries earlier this week in Washington, D.C., after a fall.
McConnell’s spokesperson reported he suffered a minor cut to the face and a sprained wrist.
Pelosi, who stepped down from House Democratic leadership in 2022 after serving as the first female speaker of the House, remains active in Congress.
Her recent re-election to her seat underscores her enduring role as a power broker in the Democratic Party.
As she continues her recovery, Pelosi’s office has emphasised her commitment to her duties and her appreciation for those who have expressed support during her hospitalisation.
