BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Liam Payne, the former One Direction singer, has tragically died at the age of 31 after falling from the third floor of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, police have confirmed.
According to a police statement on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, officers were dispatched to the hotel following an emergency call reporting “an aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol.”
Upon arrival, authorities heard a loud noise from the inner courtyard, where Payne’s body was found.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has since been transported to a morgue.
The incident follows Payne’s recent attendance at the Argentina concert of his former One Direction bandmate, Niall Horan.
From Boyband Fame to Solo Success
Liam Payne rose to fame as a member of One Direction, the globally adored boyband formed on the UK talent show The X Factor in 2010.
Originally auditioning as a solo artist, Payne was brought together with fellow hopefuls Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik to create one of the most successful boybands in modern music history.
One Direction achieved four UK number one albums, multiple chart-topping singles, and international acclaim before announcing a hiatus in 2015.
Following the band’s split, Payne launched a solo career, releasing the hit single “Strip That Down” in 2017, which peaked at number three on the UK charts.
His collaboration with Rita Ora on For You from the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack also reached the top 10.
Personal Life and Recent Challenges
In 2016, Payne married former Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole, and the couple welcomed a son, Bear, in 2017. They split the following year.
In recent weeks, Payne had faced allegations about his behaviour toward former partners, with reports surfacing on social media.
On Tuesday, it was reported that one former partner had taken legal action to prevent him from contacting her friends and family.
Payne’s death has shocked fans around the world, and tributes have already begun pouring in.
This is a developing story, and more details will be provided as they become available.
