Viral photos have emerged of the killer migrant boat captain who allegedly killed over 900 persons including men, women and children on Sunday, April 19, 2015 in a maritime disaster which has been dubbed as one of the worst of its kind since World War Two.
27-year-old Mohammed Ali Malek, from Tunisia was apprehended in the night of Monday, April 20, 2015 as soon as he arrived Sicily, Italy just 24 hours after his boat capsized in the Mediterranean.
Authorities made the captain stay back and watch the lifeless remains of about 24 victims as they were evacuated from the ship for burial on the island of Malta.
Malek was later dragged to court where he was charged with multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and aiding illegal immigration.
According to Mail Online, prosecutors claim Malek contributed to the disaster by mistakenly ramming the overcrowded fishing boat into a merchant ship that had come to its rescue.
This collision caused a shift in the position of the boat occupants which incidentally made the ship to capsize, killing hundreds of the occupants.
The nervous captain was pictured biting his fingernails while waiting for his fate to be determined.
Also pictured with the captain is a 26-year-old smuggler from Syria, Mahmud Bikhit who is also a member of Malek’s crew.
He was charged with ‘aiding illegal immigration and the duo are to appear before a judge later on Tuesday, April 21, 2015.
