Fire Guts Popular Bodija Market In Ibadan

One of the Oyo State popular markets, Bodija Market, Ibadan was on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 engulfed in flames .

Property worth about N23 million Naira were destroyed as fire razed about 16 shops in the market

Although the cause of the inferno could not be established as of press time, eyewitnesses disclosed that the fire may have been caused by high power voltage in the market.

The fire which started around 4.30am and lasted for more than 2 hours destroyed shops belonging to corn millers, hairdressers, fashion designers and hot drink sellers.

Fire fighters arrived at the scene and attempted to put out the inferno but were overwhelmed as they exhausted up to five tanks of water.

The chairman of Bodija Corn Millers Association, Mr. Wasiu Atanda who confirmed the sad incident said the fire sarted in the early hours of the morning.

He said, “We called fire fighters but they arrived 30 minutes after we called. They used up to five tanks and spent up to two hours trying to put off the fire.”
