Tragic Report: Fire Claims 14 Lives, N108.2m Property In 2 Months In FCT

NAN – The FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on Monday, March 31, 2014 said 14 persons died in fire disasters while property worth N542 million were saved between Jan. and Feb. 2014 in the territory.

The Director-General of the agency, Mr Abbas Idriss, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that N108.2million worth of property were lost in the period.

Idriss added that the agency received 198 emergency calls and 11 rescue calls out of which 57 lives were saved.

Idriss said that the agency intervened in several communal clashes that occurred within the territory by sensitising the communities and preventing the conflict from spreading.

The Director-General listed mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery as the four principles the agency used to manage disaster.

“We prepare for emergencies every time and we try to reduce its effects; we thank God that we have not had any serious emergency since the inception of the agency.

“We are sensitising people on the prevention of fire disasters, because we receive average of five fire outbreaks on daily basis within the city”, he said.

According to him, the agency is planning to recruit special marshals to help to sensitise people on the prevention of fire in the six area councils.

NAN recalls that the agency recently rolled out 13 fire stations contact numbers in case of any emergency to respond to the crises within five minutes.

The numbers are 07003283473 and 092906118 for Asokoro, 08146460687 for Gwarimpa, 08103429222 for Games Village, 08142269880 for Nigeria Judicial Institute, and 08105935774 for Garki Market.

Others are 08103359550 for Kaura, 08037294461 for Kubwa, 07063582170 for Bwari, 07038171496 for Gwagwalada, 08134741493 for Kuje, 08103349617 for Kwali, 08103559512 for Abaji and 08103826117 for Karu.

The FCTA’s toll-free emergency call centre lines are: 08099936312-4, 08031230330-2; while 122 FRSC’s line could be used to reach the agency as well.

Idriss advised residents to acquaint themselves with the numbers close to them, saying that the agency had also released No. 112 as short code line for prompt emergency response.
