YOLA, Nigeria – A tragic incident occurred in Yola, the state capital of Adamawa, when a female soldier, identified as Lance Corporal Nkiru, shot and killed a senior colleague at a checkpoint.
The female soldier was enforcing the curfew imposed by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri after hoodlums looted a government warehouse, including palliatives intended to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy.
According to sources, the incident occurred at the Fire Service Round About in the state capital.
Lance Corporal Nkiru reportedly had a dispute with civilians attempting to pass through the checkpoint during curfew hours.
Despite some identifying themselves as workers on essential duty, Nkiru insisted they turn back.
A captain attempted to intervene in the dispute, and Nkiru, who had already cocked her rifle, shot him.
A security officer who witnessed the event confirmed this sequence of events.
The injured captain was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, where he died.
Nkiru was immediately arrested and taken into custody by other soldiers.
Reports suggest that Nkiru has previously been accused of harassing civilians and displaying aggressive behavior, including cocking her rifle at minor provocations.
When approached for confirmation of the incident on Sunday, August 6, 2023, the Commander of 23 Armoured Brigade Yola, Brigadier General Muhammad Gambo, stated that journalists must seek appointments in writing before he could provide them with any comments.
