An ace American photographer, and amateur historian, Nona Faustine, has posed totally naked in ‘historically significant’ areas to Commemorate New York’s Former Slave Auctions.
Faustine who graduated from Bard College’s International Center for Photography, said she has been into the art for about three years, precisely since 2012.
But you won’t see her at the Grand Canyon or on a battlefield according to Mic, rather, Faustine’s work focuses on overlooked places in and around New York that have played a critical role in the historical black experience, especially slave trading.
She said, “Anybody who does nudes in public knows you have to be quick. A good shoot, she said, could take, from start to finish, around 20 minutes. “I’ve tried to avoid any encounters with the NYPD for obvious reasons.
“I have this desire to participate and to bring it forward and memorialize those people who have pretty much gone unacknowledged in New York history.”
Some locations where she took the NSFW shots include New York’s storied Wall Street, the graves of a Dutch pre-Revolutionary cemetery in Brooklyn, where three slaves are buried alongside early colonists.
She said, “My great-grandmother was an enslaved African. I grew up hearing my mother tell me stories about her.”
