It doesn’t take much for your spirits to be lifted after a pretty bad day.

We’ve all had that kind of day at the office where nothing has gone well or one of those weeks where you are left just feeling miserable.

While everyone is different and enjoys different things, as an accomplished scientist *cough*, I have compiled a list of 38 things that can, without fail, cheer up anyone, no matter who they are.

If none of this puts a smile on your face then you are a robot, officially.

1. That first taste of a glass of red wine or a cold bottle of beer when you sit down after a long week at work on a Friday evening.

2. Finding money when going through pockets that you forgot was there. Especially paper money.

3. Sitting through a boxset of your favourite uplifting show like Friends or The Simpsons.

4. Waking up on a Saturday and that amazing realisation that it’s the weekend, baby!

5. Unbuckling that tight belt or unbuttoning that pair of one-size-too-small jeans once you’re home from work. Bliss, you can breathe again!

6. The cold side of a pillow.

7. Hitting the snooze button and the knowledge that you still have a precious hour in bed.

8. Eating something ridiculously bad for you.

9. Fresh bed sheets.

10. Tight hugs that almost dislocate your back from someone you love.

11. Scratching that itch that has been bugging you for ages.

12. The first bite of a good meal when you are really hungry.

13. Morning sex. Sorry, but who says it has to be a night time thing?

14. The first sunny day of summer…

15…and the first snowfall of winter.

16. Reminiscing about childhood.

17. When you feel stressed and your cat curls up on your stomach until the knot goes away. Somehow, they know.

18. A text from the one you love or your crush that you weren’t expecting; especially when they text first.

19. Helping somebody to cross the road or to carry their shopping.

20. Finding someone at work with your exact sense of humour meaning that work will forever be fun from now on.

21. Giving a compliment that brightens up someone’s day and adds a bounce to their step.

22. Waking up without a hangover after a heavy night out.

23. Finding old photographs which you had forgotten about.

24. A midweek, impulsive takeaway when you can’t be bothered to cook.

25. Dancing and not caring what you look like.

26. Big, crowded, chaotic, bickering family dinners with all of the clan.

27. Post exercise euphoria after a good workout or swim.

28 Seeing the respect in someone’s eye when you admit you are wrong about something.

29. Getting a question right on a quiz show that the contestant didn’t get right and feeling extremely smart.

30. And when you correctly guess the killer in a murder mystery. Bobby Beale was pretty obvious after all, right?

32. A long soak in a hot bubble bath.

33. Long journeys where you are well equipped with music, films and food.

34. Smiling at every person you pass on your commute to work and getting smiles back.

36. The smell of someone familiar’s aftershave or perfume on your clothes or pillow.

37. Someone you admire following you on Twitter (and not because you begged for a follow).
