LAGOS, Nigeria — A heated argument between two relatives took a deadly turn in Lagos on Monday when one man fatally stabbed his cousin during a physical confrontation, the Lagos State Police Command has confirmed.
The tragic incident occurred around 7 a.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, after a disagreement between Ganiyu Ibrahim and his cousin, Afeez Akeem, escalated into violence.
According to a statement from Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin, the altercation led Ganiyu to break a bottle and stab Afeez in the chest.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
“As a result, Ganiyu broke a bottle and stabbed Afeez on the left side of his chest. The victim was rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty,” Hundeyin stated.
The suspect, Ganiyu, is currently at large, and the police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect, while detectives have already visited the scene and documented evidence.
The family of the deceased, Afeez Akeem, opted against an autopsy and instead chose to bury him “according to Islamic rites,” Hundeyin added.
Rising Concerns Over Family Violence
This incident follows a similar family tragedy earlier in October, when a 25-year-old man, Chibunma Chimelie, was detained for allegedly stabbing his 68-year-old father to death in the Isolo area of Lagos.
That case was reported to the police by the suspect’s brother, and authorities are continuing to investigate.
These incidents have raised concerns about the growing trend of family disputes turning violent, and the police have urged citizens to seek peaceful resolutions to disagreements.
The Lagos State Police Command continues its efforts to bring the suspects involved in these tragic cases to justice.
