KANO, Nigeria — Newly inaugurated governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has expressed his intention to investigate the massive N241 billion debt inherited from his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration.
During his inauguration speech on Monday, May 29, 2023, Governor Yusuf voiced disappointment in the handover notes received from Ganduje, noting a significant lack of details and transparency.
“The handover notes are far from satisfactory. They provide meagre information, and the transition committee report is equally lacking,” Yusuf stated.

Despite his dissatisfaction, the new governor expressed a commitment to carefully examine the materials provided.
“As representatives of the state, we cannot refuse to accept what has been given to us. We will thoroughly examine the details and take appropriate action based on our findings,” Yusuf promised.
Governor Yusuf criticized Ganduje for his absence during the handover process, noting that the former governor left the state ahead of the inauguration exercise, an act that he found to be a disservice to the state’s citizens.
Yusuf also questioned the Internal Generated Revenue, IGR, under Ganduje’s tenure, hinting at possible financial mismanagement.
He raised questions about how the state has faired economically and what new streams of revenue are available to his government.
In spite of these challenges, Governor Yusuf reassured Kano’s citizens of his dedication to the state’s progress.
“We remain committed to repositioning Kano as an economic force to reckon with in Nigeria,” he said, setting an ambitious tone for his term in office.
