Must read

LOS ANGELES, USA—The 2024 Emmy Awards, also known as the Emmys, delivered an evening steeped in nostalgia and surprise as television legends took the stage alongside rising stars.

From heartfelt reunions to unexpected wins, the night showcased the best of television’s past and present, reminding audiences that television’s golden age is still alive.

One of the night’s most anticipated moments was the reunion of actors from iconic shows. Stars from The West Wing appeared together to present an award.

Their appearance was met with resounding applause as they used the opportunity to encourage voter participation in this year’s elections.

Earlier in the evening, Henry Winkler and Ron Howard, famous for their roles in Happy Days, delighted the audience as they shared memories from the legendary series that made them household names.

The onstage reunion of beloved TV figures transported the audience back to a time when television was simpler, a reminder of how far the medium has come while still evoking a powerful sense of nostalgia.

But it wasn’t all about the past. The night was filled with celebrations of current television achievements.

Liza Colón-Zayas, star of The Bear, pulled off one of the night’s biggest surprises when she won the award for Outstanding Supporting Comedy Actress.

Colón-Zayas beat out industry heavyweights like Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett, becoming the first Latina to win an Emmy in the category.

Her victory was applauded by an audience eager to see more diversity in Hollywood.

The theme of representation continued with Shōgun, which made history by becoming the first non-English language series to win the Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

The groundbreaking win signalled a shift in how global storytelling is being embraced by American audiences and critics alike.

Richard Gadd, star and creator of Baby Reindeer, also took home multiple awards, including outstanding limited series.

His dark drama, based on his real-life experience of being stalked, resonated with voters.

During his acceptance speech, Gadd shared a message about the changing nature of television.

“If Baby Reindeer has proven anything, it’s that there’s no set formula to this,” Gadd said.

“You don’t need big stars or long-running series to have a hit. The only constant across any success in television is good storytelling.”

The night wasn’t just about wins and reunions; it was also a celebration of trailblazers.

John Leguizamo, a notable advocate for underrepresented groups in Hollywood, delivered a powerful speech that highlighted the ongoing fight for representation and diversity in television.

He recognised the many minorities in the nominee pool and proudly declared himself “one of Hollywood’s DEI hires,” defining DEI as “diligence, excellence, and imagination.”

“We are all DEI hires,” Leguizamo said, rallying the room with his words.

It was a night filled with reflection and excitement for the future.

As Jean Smart quipped during the ceremony about Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, “I thought it was about Rudolph,” the mood was light but the impact of the evening was profound.

Television continues to evolve, and if the 2024 Emmys proved anything, it’s that the medium’s future looks brighter than ever, with more room for risk-taking, inclusivity, and excellent storytelling.

Once again, the Emmys showcased that television is more than just entertainment—it is a reflection of society, constantly shifting, growing, and reaching new heights.
