ABUJA, Nigeria — Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has passed away at the age of 82.

His son, Jide Iwuanyanwu, confirmed the news in a statement released on Thursday, July 25, 2024, noting that Chief Iwuanyanwu succumbed to a brief illness.

Chief Iwuanyanwu leaves behind a substantial legacy of leadership and dedication to the Igbo community.

Before his passing, he served as the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a global Igbo socio-cultural organisation, and as the President of Owerri Peoples Assembly.

The late Chief is survived by his wife, Lady Princess Frances Iwuanyanwu, along with numerous children and grandchildren.

The family has indicated that burial arrangements will be announced following appropriate consultations.

In the wake of his death, many tributes have begun to flow, celebrating Chief Iwuanyanwu’s significant contributions to the Igbo community.

His leadership, characterised by a steadfast commitment to advancing Igbo interests, has left an indelible mark on those he served.

With branches across Nigeria and in the diaspora, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has been pivotal in advocating for the political and economic well-being of the Igbo people.

Chief Iwuanyanwu’s tenure as President General was marked by his vigorous advocacy for the Igbo community.
