Election Violence: Traditional Ruler Shot Dead In Ebonyi

Igboke Ewa, the chairman of Ezza Traditional Rulers Council in Ebonyi State, has been gunned down.

The unfortunate incident followed the outcome of the Saturday presidential and National Assembly elections.

Daily Post learnt that the incident occurred on Monday, February 27, 2023, when gunmen suspected to be political thugs invaded the premises of the monarch and opened fire on him.

A statement by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Hon. Barr. Uchenna Orji, blamed the ugly incident on opposition party members who are not happy with the results of the Saturday polls.

The statement reads, “The Governor is aware that a number of candidates have been making provocative and inciting statements about the election results in Ebonyi State.

“The Governor of Ebonyi State warns that no position in life worths the life of another person.

“His Excellency the Governor is directing the whole Security apparatus of the State to move into Ezza North for a rescue mission.

“Anybody whose hand is in the killing of His Highness must be arrested immediately.

“The Governor appeals to all leaders of the State and the candidates who will never accept the result of the election to send their petitions to INEC or to security agencies, than making inciting statements that could generate crisis in the State.

“His Excellency, the Governor will hold anyone doing Press conference or social media to incite people responsible for any outbreak of crisis in the State.

“The Governor appeals to Ebonyi people especially our youths not to be used to take the life of another person.

“Please we have no alternative to peace in Ebonyi State”.

2023 Polls: Tension In Rivers As Gunmen Launch Multiple Attacks, Police Arrest Reps Member

Political thugs have attacked the residence of the House of Representatives candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, for Obio-Akpor Federal constituency, Rivers State, King Tony Gboms.

Sources told Daily Post that there were heavy shootings on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at the premises of Gboms.

It is still unclear whether anyone was injured during the attack.

Gunmen had the same night attacked the premises of a TV/Radio station owned by a former House of Representatives member, Chinyere Igwe, in Ozuoba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.

In another development, the member representing Etche-Omuma in the House of Representatives, Ephraim Nwuzi, who is seeking re-election, has been taken away by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Detectives attached to the State CID are reported to have invaded the residence of Nwuzi, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress in Chokocho, a community in Etche Local Government Area.

It was alleged that the detectives broke into his residence through his back gate, before gaining access into his building.

Other members of the APC in Rivers State arrested include Chijindu Innocent and Emmanuel, both from Omuma LGA and Victory Agbara-Ngbagbu from Tai Local Government Area.

The Rivers State Police Command is yet to issue any statement.

However, the newly redeployed Assistant Inspector General of Police and 4 Commissioners of Police also deployed to the state are expected to brief journalists later on Wednesday, February 22, 2023

Gunmen Attack The Constituency Office Of Federal Lawmaker Benjamin Kalu

Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen have attacked the constituency office of the House of Representatives spokesperson, Hon. Benjamin Kalu in Bende, Abia State.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday, January 28, 2023, Kalu condemned the attack, describing the attack as an act of cowardice.

He said that over 100 bullet shells were found in the aftermath of the attack that destroyed the windows and doors of the office.

Kalu who did not report any loss of life said there was no presence of any security agents until the gunmen left, informing however that the matter had been reported to the police station at Uzuakoli.

He said “My office in Bende located at Uzuakoli constituency was on Jan 27 at exactly 10 p.m attacked and over a 100 bullet were found, destroying the windows, the doors

“Other items affected includes the ceiling and the APC flag which were pulled down and turned into shreds, my billboards were also destroyed.”

The spokesman said the development was unreal to the advancement of democracy in Nigeria, wonderingly the reason for the attack.

“The past three and half years, I have dedicated my servant leadership position to better the lots of my people with infrastructures attracted through the office of the President.

“My political party as a ruling party has shown presence in my federal constituency in education, health, infrastructure among others.

“This was possible because my representation put the people at the centre stage which has offended many people who have wanted the status quo ante to remain.”

He left a message for the mastermind of the attack, saying his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, has left traces of good governance in his constituency.

“My message to them is that my party has left evidence of good governance to the people of my constituency”, Kalu said.
