LAGOS, Nigeria — A potentially explosive crisis is brewing in Nigeria’s political landscape, as some governors and politicians accused of corruption are allegedly making plans to abscond the country ahead of the May 29, 2023, inauguration of President-elect Bola Tinubu, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
This development comes amidst widespread political transition, as newly elected governors, senators, and House of Representatives and state House Assembly members gear up for their own inauguration ceremonies on the same day.
Wilson Uwujaren, the EFCC’s spokesperson, disclosed these plans on Friday, May 19, 2023.
He stated that the anti-corruption agency, in collaboration with international partners, is making determined efforts to thwart any potential escape efforts by these politicians.
“The Commission is working in close collaboration with its international partners to frustrate these escape plans and bring those involved to justice,” said Uwujaren.
He made clear the commission’s unyielding stance on ensuring that all political actors involved in corruption during their public service will face the law’s full force.
The revelation has instigated a wave of public anxiety, as the fight against corruption in Nigeria takes on a more urgent and high-stakes aspect.
“Again, the Commission wishes to alert the public about plans by some of the alleged corrupt politically exposed persons to flee the country ahead of May 29, 2023,” read the EFCC’s statement.
As the country prepares for a monumental transition of power, this development underscores the challenges Nigeria faces in holding its political elite accountable.
This ongoing saga will undoubtedly cast a long shadow over the impending inauguration ceremonies, potentially marking the beginning of a critical new chapter in Nigeria’s fight against political corruption.
