ABUJA, Nigeria – The family of the late Niger Delta elder statesman, Edwin Clark, has issued a warning against unauthorised fundraising efforts for his funeral.
In a statement released on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, the family clarified that no individual or group has been authorised to solicit public funds or support for the burial arrangements.
The statement, jointly signed by Panaowei Clark, Chief Ebikeme Clark, and Miss Emomotimi Clark, emphasised that any discussions or arrangements regarding the funeral must involve the family directly.
“Nobody has been mandated or nominated by the family to approach the Federal or state governments, groups, or individuals to solicit support in any form, discuss, or arrange for the burial of our late father and patriarch, Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark,” the statement read.
“No such arrangement can be made without the direct involvement of the family.”
The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy since Clark’s passing on 17 February 2025, acknowledging the visits of mourners to his homes in Kiagbodo, Delta State, as well as Lagos and Abuja.
“We are indeed overwhelmed by the love and solidarity shown by all who have identified with and commiserated with our family in this trying time. We deeply appreciate the Federal Government and various state governors for their condolences and the moral and financial support given to us in receiving our numerous visitors,” the statement noted.
The family also commended groups such as the Ijaw National Congress, Pan Niger Delta Forum, Afenifere, Arewa, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and the Middle Belt Forum for their support during this period.
Acknowledging Clark’s national stature, the family stressed that his burial arrangements would require careful planning and coordination with key stakeholders.
“To this effect, we want to inform the general public that no individual or group has been authorised by the family to solicit funds or support from any quarter regarding our late father’s burial. Any such discussions or arrangements must involve us directly,” the statement added.
The family assured the public that they would work with relevant stakeholders to finalise the date and programme for the burial, appealing for understanding and cooperation from all concerned.
Edwin Clark, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics and a vocal advocate for the Niger Delta region, passed away at the age of 97.
His contributions to national development and his role in shaping the Niger Delta’s political landscape have been widely celebrated.
