The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) via a statement on Monday, February 9, 2015 has directed Nigerians to abide by the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the general elections from February 14 and 28 to March 28 and April 11, 2015.
While challenging the security agencies to direct their energies towards restoring law and order in the North Eastern part of the country, ECOWAS urged Nigerians and political parties alike to respect the decision of INEC, regardless of their concerns and disappointments.
The West African sub-regional body also besought INEC to make use of the postponement of the polls to conclude all arrangements, especially the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
ECOWAS further cautioned politicians and political parties to shun utterances that will incite the populace towards acts of electoral violence, urging Nigerians to respect the rule of law.
