A fourth doctor has lost her life to the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone after efforts to transfer her abroad for treatment failed.
Dr. Olivet Buck gave up the ghost late on Saturday, August 13, 2014 a few hours after World Health Organisation (WHO) confirmed that it could not be possible to medically evacuate her to Germany.
Sierra Leone had asked for funds from the WHO to transport Buck back to Europe as it could not afford to lose another doctor to the virus.
WHO responded by saying it could not meet the request but would help give Buck the best medical care obtainable in Sierra Leone including access to experimental drugs.
According to WHO, over 300 health workers have been infected with the virus in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone with almost half of the losing their lives.
Dr Sheik Humarr Khan, Sierra Leone’s top Ebola doctor, was being considered for evacuation to a European country when he died of the disease in late July.
