ABUJA, Nigeria – The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a stern warning to citizens and individuals participating in the upcoming inauguration activities of the new administration.

In a statement released on Thursday, May 25, 2023, by DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya, the agency expressed concerns about potential disruptions and subversive actions by certain elements across the country.

The DSS emphasized the need to uphold security protocols and ensure peaceful ceremonies during the inauguration.

The agency aims to prevent panic, fear, and the undermining of security agencies’ efforts.

Afunanya’s statement urged citizens, media organizations, and Civil Society Organisations to adhere to security and civil protocols strictly.

They were also cautioned against spreading fake news, false alarms, and sensationalized narratives that could escalate division, tension, and violence surrounding the events.

“These undesirable acts will serve no purpose other than destroying national unity and cohesion,” the statement read.

The DSS further warned unauthorized individuals from accessing restricted and designated areas at the event venues. The agency stressed the importance of the populace remaining calm and law-abiding.

The Department of State Services reiterated its commitment to collaborating with sister agencies to ensure the successful inauguration of the new administration.

As previously announced by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Transition Council (PTC) on May 18, 2023, the highlight of the inauguration activities will be the swearing-in of the President on May 29, 2023, in Abuja. Simultaneously, new Governors will also be inaugurated in most states across the country.

With the DSS’s warning, security measures are expected to be heightened to safeguard the smooth and peaceful transition of power.

The agency’s call for compliance with protocols and the avoidance of misinformation serves as a reminder of the importance of unity during this crucial period of national change.
