KANO, Nigeria – The Department of State Services (DSS) announced the arrest of two men transporting AK-47 rifles hidden in a sack of yams in Kano on Thursday, April 20, 2023.
The suspects were allegedly en route to deliver the weapons for a planned attack in one of the northern states.
DSS operatives intercepted the men before they could reach their destination, seizing two AK-47 rifles, two empty AK-47 magazines, a red-colored motorcycle, and the bag of yams concealing the firearms.
Peter Afunanya, the public relations officer of the DSS, confirmed the arrests in a statement sent to the press on Thursday, emphasising the importance of continued vigilance by citizens.
“This development underscores the need for citizens to be extra vigilant and report any unusual or suspicious movements, persons, or acts to the security agencies nearest to them,” Dr Afunanya said in a statement.
Afunanya also urged operators and patrons of fun, hospitality, and tourism centers to exercise caution during the festive periods and to implement measures ensuring the safety of their facilities.
The DSS pledged to work alongside sister agencies and other stakeholders to provide adequate security during and after the events.
In light of the arrests, Afunanya concluded the statement by wishing the Muslim faithful a peaceful and joyous Eid al-Fitr celebration.
