ABUJA, Nigeria – For the first time since his incarceration two years ago, Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, met with his personal physicians in an Abuja hospital, outside the facility of the Department of State Services, DSS, on Saturday, July 29, 2023.

The meeting was disclosed by Kanu’s lead counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, who tweeted about the development on Sunday, July 30, 2023.

In his tweet, Ejiofor wrote: “Sequel to our avowed assurance to always keep Ezigbo UmuChineke abreast of pertinent happenings especially with Onyendu’s health status, welfare, and update on his legal matters, we are pleased to inform you that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu met with his choice personal physician yesterday in a hospital in Abuja, outside the facility of the State Security Service (SSS).”

Ejiofor also confirmed that he witnessed the consultation and described the medical examination as “seamless and productive.” He added that Kanu would be progressing to the next stage soon.

Furthermore, the human rights lawyer reiterated Kanu’s consistent position on the unauthorized sit-at-home orders, calling for a stop to the directive.

The legal team of Nnamdi Kanu, under the leadership of Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, and IPOB leadership, has been vocal in conveying this message and condemning related criminal activities.

Similarly, Ejiofor urged public members to respect and carry out Kanu’s wishes by refraining from engaging with those promoting unauthorized sit-at-home orders and enforcing them.

The meeting with the personal physicians and the counsel’s statement come at a crucial time, shedding light on the health status and ongoing legal matters concerning Nnamdi Kanu.

The development also signifies progress in the legal process surrounding his incarceration.

Kanu’s supporters and human rights activists have been keenly following developments surrounding his detention, and this update is likely to be seen as a positive step towards transparency and adherence to due process.

How the situation will unfold in the coming days remains to be seen.

Still, the clear communication from Kanu’s legal team appears to be aimed at reassuring his followers and urging compliance with his directives.

The call to end unauthorized sit-at-home orders may also have a broader impact on the stability and normalcy of daily life in the Southeastern region of Nigeria.
