The commissioner of health in Ondo State, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju has urged the federal government of Nigeria to reconsider their decision to layoff health workers engaged under the SURE-P Midwives Scheme because of the success they recorded in reducing maternal and child mortality in the last few years.
He made the declaration in a meeting with 400 health workers working with the scheme.
In a report from the Vanguard, Dr. Adeyanju tasked the federal government to close all leakages in the system instead of an outright disengagement of health workers.
He said; “You would recall that last week, the Federal Government decided to withdraw from the SURE-P Midwives Scheme, saying it cannot sustain it anymore.”
He said if the government must pullout, it should be a gradual process.
He further stated the the Ondo State government is willing to keep the health workers and is currently working out plans to retain the 400 health workers for their performance.
