Dolly Parton and Carl Dean celebrated a sweet milestone!
The couple tied the knot on May 30, 1966, and for their golden wedding anniversary, they renewed their vows.
Just like when they first said their vows, according to RadarOnline.com, the private event included Dolly’s mother Avie Lee, their minister and his wife.
Ahead of the renewal, the 70-year-old country star spoke to People about how it would be a big event unlike their first wedding.
“I’ll have a beautiful wedding dress, ’cause I didn’t have a big, long wedding dress when we got married and we’ve got a suit for him, so we’re going to dress up and take a bunch of pictures,” she said.
Dolly plans to sell the photos to benefit her Imagination Library literacy charity, and it’s an idea that she said she was “shocked” her husband went along with.
“My husband is a loner,” she explained to the mag. “He doesn’t particularly care about being around anybody but me. He’s just always asked me to leave him out of all this. He does not like all the hullabaloo.”
When Dolly and Carl married 50 years ago, she just signed with Monument Records. She was planning her wedding but was asked to wait a year to marry as she needed to be free to work.
“I said ‘Okay,'” she recalled during a press event to announce her new album “Pure and Simple.” “That weekend, me and Carl went to Ringgold, Georgia and got married so it wouldn’t be in the Tennessee papers.”
The love story of Dolly Parton and Carl Dean is one that deserves to be written about though!
The couple met outside of the Wishy Washy Laundromat in Nashville, Tennessee on the first day that Dolly moved there. Her website tells the story, “Falling in love and getting married were, perhaps, the last things on young Dolly Parton’s mind. Yet, here was a tall, dark and handsome man who swept her off her feet.”
She shares, “I was surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me). He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.”
Two years after they met, they married in a simple, private ceremony with only her mother, the preacher and his wife.
“Since that day, Dolly and Carl have lived happily-ever-after for 50 years. They’ve loved and supported each other while respecting each other’s independence,” her site says.
And you can feel like you’re a part of their wedding, because starting on July 1, 2016, her wedding dress and Carl’s suit will be on display at Dolly’s Chasing Rainbows Museum at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
Their love can also be heard. Dolly’s song “From Here to the Moon and Back” is about her husband.
The lyrics read, “From here to the moon and back/ Who else in this world will love you like that?/ Love everlasting, I promise you that/From here to the moon and back.”
Happy anniversary Dolly and Carl!
