IMO, Nigeria – Rev. Fr. Jude Maduka, a prominent figure in the Catholic Diocese of Okigwe, Imo State, has been reportedly kidnapped by unidentified assailants.

The incident, as reported by the Chancellor and Secretary of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Iwuanyanwu, occurred on Saturday, May 20, 2023, in Okigwe LGA, as Maduka was inspecting a new site of worship in Ogii village.

“Fr. Jude Kingsley Maduka, an integral pillar of our community for over a decade, was kidnapped from his New Adoration site while on inspection at the new site,” a deeply concerned Iwuanyanwu told journalists on Saturday, May 20, 2023.

Fr. Maduka, renowned for his compassionate leadership, has served as the parish priest of Christ the King Parish, Ezinnachi/Ugwaku, Okigwe LGA since his ordination over ten years ago.

His sudden disappearance has cast a gloomy shadow over the Catholic community in Imo State, raising concerns about religious freedom and security in the region.

“We solicit your fervent prayers that he may come back to us safe and sound,” Iwuanyanwu added, calling upon the global Christian community for spiritual support in this challenging time.

The incident seems to be shrouded in mystery, as attempts to contact the Imo State Police Command for comments have been unfruitful.

Henry Okoye, the Public Relations Officer for the Command, was unreachable at the time of reporting, with his phone reportedly switched off.

With escalating tension and concern in the community, the incident has further intensified the need for a consolidated approach to address issues of religious intolerance and insecurity, particularly in Imo State and, by extension, Nigeria as a whole.

As the Catholic community prays for Maduka’s safe return, the incident stands as a stark reminder of the threats faced by religious leaders in Nigeria.

The onus now falls on the Nigerian security forces and government to address these issues head-on and ensure the safety of its citizens, particularly those serving the community in religious capacities.

For now, the search continues for Fr. Maduka, the priest whose disappearance has left a void in the hearts of the people of Ezinnachi/Ugwaku.
