Democracy Day: Nigerian Government Declares June 12 a Public Holiday

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has announced Monday, June 12, 2023, as a public holiday to celebrate this year’s Democracy Day.

The declaration was made on behalf of the government on Thursday, June 8, 2023, by the permanent secretary, Oluwatoyin Akinlade.

In a statement, Dr Akinlade congratulated all Nigerians on the upcoming celebration. He noted the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic journey, acknowledging the various challenges and triumphs it has encountered.

“Nigeria’s democratic journey has, like in many other climes, encountered both stormy and smooth sails, but the ship of State, its institutions and most importantly, the Nigerian people, have remained steadfast on the tenets of democratic governance,” he said.

He encouraged Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to take time during the celebration to appreciate the progress made, celebrate the milestones achieved, and look forward to a brighter future for the country’s democracy.

The permanent secretary concluded by extending wishes for a happy Democracy Day celebration to all Nigerians.
