ABUJA, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has not yet received official communication from the House of Representatives regarding its recent resolution on the nation’s voter register.
The statement was made by Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, on Friday, May 5, 2023 in Abuja.
Oyekanmi’s comments came in response to a publication by the House of Representatives that called for the removal of fictitious names from the voter register. The House passed the resolution unanimously during its plenary on Thursday, adopting a motion of urgent public importance.
The motion was moved by Leke Abejide, a member representing the Yagba East/West/Mopamuro constituency in the 9th National Assembly.
Oyekanmi stated, “Our attention has been drawn to media reports of the resolution passed by the House of Representatives on Friday, asking INEC to take certain actions on the National Register of Voters.”
However, the commission has not yet received official communication from the House concerning the resolution.
Oyekanmi explained that it is customary for the House to transmit such resolutions with details of the proceedings to the commission, allowing INEC to take the necessary steps.
“But the commission has yet to receive any communication from the House. Therefore, I cannot respond on the basis of media reports,” Oyekanmi concluded.
