The Dangote Foundation has donated N150 Million to help fund the Ebola Emergency Operation Centre in Lagos state.
This was made known on Thursday, August 14, 2014 in Abuja by the chief executive officer of the foundation, Adiembong Adaga, who said the decision was to complement the federal government’s effort towards containing and eradicating the deadly virus in the country.
So far, a total of 189 Nigerians have been quarantined and being tested for the deadly virus which has claimed over 900 lives in West Africa. Ebola has claimed four lives in Nigeria from the virus, whom of which all had personal contact with the Liberian, Patrick Sawyer who brought the virus to Nigeria.
Commending the foundation’s donation, the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, enjoined well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the goodwill effort. He also said this was a time to show citizens’ solidarity.
Mr. Maku also advised individuals placed under surveillance to obey medical directives by not trying to escape as with the nurse who ran away to Enugu State. He said this was important because it could save the life of the patient and many others.
Nigeria has recorded 10 cases of Ebola since a Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer, imported the disease into the country. Also, four out of the 10 cases have died including the index case, Mr. Sawyer, while 169 others are under surveillance.
