I have a lawn in my house and whenever I don’t water it for a while it starts to get dry and the grass takes on a brownish hue rather the green it’s meant to be. At those times, what the grass needs is water. Ephesians 5:26 talks about “washing with water through the word”.
Many times, like my lawn, our lives are dry and instead of green fertile days, we have arid brown days where things don’t work out. While it is good to pray at those times, prayer may not be only what you need. What may be most needful is to wash ourselves with the Word of God by daily reading then meditation and finally application of what we’ve read.
Prayer was never meant to be an alternative to reading The Bible. In fact, reading The Bible only makes prayer more effective. Think of it like this-when the lawn is brown, it needs water first (The Word of God) not fertilizer (prayer). After the lawn has been watered then you can fertilize. Moral of the story? Read your Bible and pray everyday.
