Daily Meditations: Avoid Contentious People

Must read

2 Corinthians 10:4 says “the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds”. When many Christians read this they imagine some powerful spiritual weapon, but in many cases our best weapon is wisdom. When faced with an enemy, many of us have a tendency to fight back and defend ourselves but Romans 16:17 “mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them”.

It may be necessary to confront your enemies sometimes, but it is best to avoid them when you can. In Mark 3:6 we read “and the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him. But Jesus withdrew himself with his disciples to the sea: and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judaea”. When His enemies were plotting against Him, Jesus, who could summon angels to His defense, simply used His non carnal weapon of wisdom and withdrew Himself from them. Why did Jesus avoid them and why should we do likewise? Because of Proverbs 2:7 “He is a shield to those who walk with integrity”.
