THE Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Western Marine Command (WMC), has impounded a 1,583 cartons of frozen poultry products valued at over N9.8 million.
The Customs Area Controller of the command, Yusuf Umar, who disclosed this Tuesday in Lagos, said the command collaborated with the Nigerian Army to dislodge the smugglers that barricaded the Lagos- Badagry and Idi Iroko roads in an attempt to prevent the Customs officers from evacuating the seized goods.
He extolled his officers and men, especially those working in the operations and intelligence units, for swinging into action before the smugglers could escape with the consignment. Umar noted that since the launch of Operation Hawk Descend by the Customs headquarters last July, a special anti-smuggling operation against frozen poultry, his command has made a total seizure of 6,668 cartons of the contraband.
“That figure is about the highest in the country. As we destroyed these products in the presence of officials of NAFDAC, DSS, the Nigeria Police and journalists, I want to reiterate that the WMC, under my watch, will not tolerate smuggling and other vices that will cripple the economy and increase crimes.
