CALABAR, Nigeria — Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State ordered the suspension of recruitment into the state’s civil service on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Ogbeche, Governor Otu has also called for a thorough re-verification of all civil servants in the state.
He further instructed the revalidation of all promotions granted in the last six months.
These measures, the governor stressed, were integral to the broader plan to transform and modernize the civil service, equipping it to better meet modern-day service delivery objectives.
“This is in line with Cross River government’s desire to reposition the state civil service to meet modern-day service delivery objectives,” the governor said via his press secretary.
“It will also enable the government to plan effectively for the overall good of hardworking civil servants.”
In the coming days, all civil servants in the state will be required to undergo screening and documentation at the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.
The specific date for this exercise will be announced soon, according to the statement.
Governor Otu’s decision comes at a time when several states are seeking to reform their public service systems, and it adds Cross River to the list of states keen on revitalizing their civil service for more effective administration and service delivery.
