Akwa Ibom Man Who Killed Father Over Landed Property Handed Death Sentence

Must read

Akwa Ibom State High court sitting in Etinan Local Government Area of the State has sentenced one Moses Abdon Edo, aged 37, to death by hanging for killing his father, Abdon Peter Edo.

The Court presided over by Justice Ezekiel Enang held that the convict, an indigene of Ikot Ukobo in Nsit Ubium LGA had confessed in his statement on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, that he single-handedly killed his father in a broad daylight on 29th July, 2015, in his house and buried him beside his son’s grave.

Justice Enang in a one-hour judgement said the convict, who is the first son of the deceased, also confessed that he pursued his father to the backyard of his old building and hit his head on the wall where he died on the spot over landed property.

The Court held that once a confessional statement is positive, direct, and unequivocal of fact, it is sufficient to secure conviction of the accused even without the evidence being collaborated.

Justice Enang said in a charge of murder, what the prosecution must prove beyond reasonable doubt, are the ingredients of the offence that the deceased died and that the death was caused by the act of the accused with an intention to kill or cause him grievous bodily harm.

The Court held that by smashing the head of his father on the wall, the convict had intended to kill him.

Justice Ezekiel Enang found Moses Edo, an okada rider, guilty of murder and ordered that he should be hanged or lethal substance injected inside him until he is dead.

The case, which was prosecuted by the State Ministry of Justice and defended by the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, has laid to rest, eight years of prosecution of the matter at the trial Court.

‘Marriage is not only about food’: Woman Drags Husband To Court Over Withheld Conjugal Rights

Joy Abu, a businesswoman, on Thursday, March 9, 2023, dragged her husband, Daniel before a Customary Court in Nyanya, Abuja, for allegedly denying her conjugal rights.

Joy, who resides in the Jikwoyi area of Abuja, also accused her husband of being irresponsible.

The woman, who is seeking a divorce, told the court that her husband does not care about her and their children.

“My husband has practically denied me of my conjugal rights; he doesn’t care to know how I feel, he doesn’t know that marriage is not only about food.

“A responsible man will cater also for the emotional needs of his wife,”she said.

The petitioner stated that her husband doesn’t provide for the family and also abandoned them for one year.

She prayed the court to grant her divorce; the custody of the children and compel her husband to pay N100,000 for the upkeep of their children every month.

Daniel, who was present in court, denied all the allegations.

Labaran Gusau, the presiding Judge, however, adjourned the matter until March 30, for hearing.

Ogun: Angry Husband, Son Attack Doctor After Wife Dies In Federal Medical Centre

An angry man and his son on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, attacked a medical doctor and a nurse at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, following the death of his wife.

The man-son fighting team had descended heavily on the medical practitioners around 2am on Tuesday, December 20, 2022, shortly after they were informed of the 53-year-old woman’s death at the emergency ward of the FMC.

Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Ogun State, Dr Kunle Ashimi, condemned the attack in a chat with journalist, saying the woman died of heart failure.

Ashimi identified the assaulted Doctor as Pelumi Somorin, adding that the identity of the nurse was yet to be ascertained.

According to him, the father and son slapped the doctor when the death of their family member was announced to them.

Ashimi said the 53-year-old woman was presented to the hospital with a severe form of heart failure, which in itself, he said, showed that it would take more than a miracle for the woman to survive.

“In other words, she was at the end stage of heart failure. This was explained to the relatives when she was brought to the facility but, notwithstanding, we also believe in miracles and we feel that we should do our best to see what can happen,” he said.

”Unfortunately, this particular patient gave up the ghost around 2 am and the husband and son of the deceased descended on the doctor that had been taking care of the patient when the news of her death was announced.

“The doctor received a slap from each of them and subsequently they descended on her and she was only saved by people around.

”A nurse was also assaulted by these people,” he said.

The NMA Chairman stated that police were alerted, but despite their presence the son continued with the assault.

He informed that the DPO of Kemta Police Station, who led the police team to the scene, had eventually taken the duo to the station, where their statements were taken.

Meanwhile, Ashimi has warned Nigerians to desist from assaulting healthcare givers, vowing that anyone found guilty would be brought to book.

“We have decided that this will be the last and we will not stop at pleadings. We have decided to take the case to the court and we shall be in the court tomorrow.

“Every legal proceeding has been commenced and we shall take this case to the court.

“We want to make an appeal and as well as a warning to all those who use hospital services in Ogun state that the Nigerian Medical Association, as well as its affiliates and each individual doctor, will not henceforth accept the term ‘we are sorry’ from anybody who assaults any of our members.

“We will go to any length to prosecute such persons and we will not accept the pleading of anybody no matter how highly placed the person is,” he warned.

The Police Public Relations Officer Ogun, Abimbola Oyeyemi, could not be reached for comments.
