Two sisters are now scared for their lives following a ruling by their Indian village court which ordered men to rape them.
The court ruled the capital punishment for the two siblings because their brother eloped with a married woman, but they escaped and have been hiding ever since.
The duo of 23-year-old Meenakshi Kumari and her 15-year-old sister ran away from their village of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, with their family following the ruling.
Their parents explained that a group of elected members of the village council, all of whom are men, ordered that Kumari and her sister be raped and paraded around naked with their faces blackened in their bid to punish them for their brother’s deeds.
The family filed a petition with the Supreme Court in Delhi, seeking protection for their family so they can go home.
The family is worried over the safety of the married woman who eloped with their brother and even claims to be pregnant for him.
Kumari’s father, Sumit Kumar, also filed a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission, alleging harassment by the police in their hometown.
According to the father, the police refused to help them after the council ruling, WWWN reports.
The Supreme Court ordered Uttar Pradesh officials to reply to the petition within a month.
The villagers are sad to have become even more aggressive than they were since the family fled a petiton at the Supreme Court.
Sumit said: “After we went to the Supreme Court, the villagers became even more aggressive.”
