Coroner Delivers Verdict On Dana Plane Crash

An inconclusive verdict has been delivered  by the coroner, Magistrate Oyetade Komolafe into to an inquest of the Dana Flight 992 air-crash on  the June 3, 2012 in Lagos that claimed the lives of 153 passengers when it crash into a building in Ikeja, Lagos.

The inquest, which began June 18, 2012 is based on an order by the Chief Coroner of Lagos State, Justice Okunnu after a request and petition by human right lawyer Mr. Femi Falana (SAN) to determination of the cause of death of the Dana crash victims.

The coroner’s verdict could not be determined for now as the report submitted by the AIB was a preliminary report.

In the AIB’ preliminary report it stated that the aircraft lost both engines while approaching its destination at the Murtala Muhammad Airport in Lagos and that the black box had been retrieved and sent over to the aircraft manufacture abroad  to  extract and analyze its data.

Those who appeared where representatives of  the  Nigeria Police, Federal Ministry of Aviation; Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Federal Airports Authority, Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA),Pathologists and  Dana Air .

The coroner, issued with a 9-point recommendation urging governments at all levels to establish effective emergency response units to minimize the causalities in future emergencies.
