Controversy Erupts Over Alleged Military Parade for President Tinubu’s Son

Must read

ABUJA, Nigeria – A viral video showing a military-style parade allegedly held in honour of Seyi Tinubu, son of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, has sparked nationwide debate, prompting calls for a full investigation.

The footage, which surfaced online earlier last week, depicted armed individuals in uniform performing drills and saluting Seyi Tinubu.

Critics have raised questions about the legality of the event, while supporters defended it as a symbolic gesture of solidarity.

Atiku Abubakar Calls for Probe

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the parade, labelling it a “desecration of military traditions.”

In a statement by his media adviser on Saturday, December 28, 2024, Paul Ibe, Atiku insisted that the Nigerian Armed Forces must remain apolitical and immune to any form of nepotism or partisanship.

Atiku expressed concern over the group involved, identified as the “Nigeria Cadet Network,” noting that it is not officially recognised by the Nigerian military.

He called for an investigation into the group’s legal standing, their possession of firearms, and any ties to security operatives.

“This incident raises serious questions about the integrity of our Armed Forces and their separation from civilian influence,” the statement read.

Tinubu Family Responds

Sources close to the Tinubu family downplayed the incident, clarifying that the event was organised by a voluntary youth group and was not an official military event.

“The parade was simply an honour by a youth-based civic group, not the military,” an anonymous organiser stated.

“Seyi Tinubu has been a role model to many young people, and this was their way of showing appreciation.”

Supporters argue that the display was a harmless act of solidarity, while critics see it as an inappropriate display of power and privilege.

Public Reactions

The parade has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians. Some view it as a troubling example of power abuse, particularly given the country’s history of military coups and political nepotism.

Others see it as an innocent expression of admiration for the President’s son.

Military’s Silence

The Nigerian military has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, leaving many questions unanswered about the event’s legality and implications.

Atiku Abubakar has urged security agencies to investigate thoroughly and ensure accountability if any laws were breached.

As the controversy continues to unfold, Nigerians are left debating whether the incident was a mere act of enthusiasm or a deeper reflection of systemic privilege and blurred lines between civilian and military spheres.
