EDUNABON, Nigeria – A tragic incident occurred at Moro Junction, Edunabon in Osun State, Nigeria, where a commercial motorcyclist named Toromade Adebowale was shot and killed by gunmen.
According to reports on Saturday, July 1, 2023, Adebowale was celebrating the election of new executives for the union of motorcyclists in the town when the shooting occurred.
In addition to Adebowale, who was struck by a bullet in the stomach area, another individual, whose identity is yet to be revealed, was injured during the incident.
The injured motorcyclist is reportedly responding to treatment at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, OAUTHC, in Ile-Ife.
An eyewitness and newly elected union executive, who requested anonymity, stated that the group was in the middle of their celebration when they heard gunshots.
He further explained that the immediate past leadership was not willing to relinquish power, but the identity of the shooters remains unknown.
Adebowale tragically passed away before he could be taken to a hospital.
The eyewitness added, “His name is Toromade Adebowale. He hailed from Olukolo Compound in Edunabon. After the swearing-in of new executives, we escorted our Ife zonal chairman to Moro Junction. We were celebrating the successful election of the new executives when we heard gunshots… Toromade (Adebowale) went for his introduction/wedding ceremony at his in-law’s house in Ede. His wife is even pregnant. We are preparing him for burial now.”
The Osun State Police Command has commenced investigations into the incident.
The spokesperson for the Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, confirmed that bullets fired by unknown gunmen hit two individuals.
She added, “One of them is currently responding to treatment at the OAUTHC, Ile-Ife, but the second person died before reaching a hospital.”
The authorities are working to unravel the identities of the shooters and bring them to justice.
This incident has brought grief to the community and raised concerns regarding public safety and security.
Residents of the area are urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement officials in their investigation.
