Citing 70 Million Housing Deficit, Peter Obi Appeals for Compassion in Demolition of Illegal Structures

ABUJA, Nigeria – Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the general elections, has called on governments involved in the demolition of ‘illegal’ structures across Nigeria to exercise humanity and compassion.

In a tweet on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, Obi raised concerns about the victims, who are primarily ordinary citizens, left displaced or deprived due to the demolitions.

Obi mentioned that while there may be legitimate reasons behind some demolitions, it’s essential to acknowledge the impact on the affected individuals, many of whom may have made errors innocently or were ill-informed.

He stated, “Necessary corrective measures to planning or zoning violations by governments need not be punitive or unduly insensitive. There should always be room for compassion and humane correction in taking any remedial action.”

Mr. Obi pointed out the paradox of Nigeria’s housing situation: a country with a deficit of 70 million housing units, yet witnessing the demolition of structures serving as homes, businesses, and offices.

He attributed some of these unauthorized constructions to either a lack of formal approval or tacit collusion with local authorities.

Highlighting the economic challenges faced by citizens due to stagnant incomes, inflation, unemployment, and a high cost of living, he urged governmental authorities to balance enforcing compliance with existing regulations with considerations for the well-being of the people.

Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, suggested that the concerned governments should contemplate compensating those who have lost properties and livelihoods due to the demolitions.

He emphasized that such compensations could fall under the eminent domain principle, applied when properties or assets are acquired or demolished in public interest.

In conclusion, he reminded the affected governments and governors that their primary duty and responsibility should be to protect and care for their citizens, urging them to consider the human implications of their actions.
