ABUJA, Nigeria – In a social media post that has sparked widespread concern, Charly Boy, a renowned civil rights activist and former president of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, PMAN, has claimed that the government of President Bola Tinubu is plotting to arrest Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
The activist expressed these concerns on his X social media handle, @AreaFada1, on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
Charly Boy’s alarm centres on what he describes as an unjust move against Obi due to his persistent criticism of the current administration.
“There’s a report of an attempt of arrest on Peter Obi, by Tinubu’s Government over Peter Obi’s consistent refusal to back down on calling Tinubu out towards good governance and accountability,” the entertainer wrote on X.
He further warned that any arrest or charges against Obi “must be met with a resistance as never seen in the history of Nigeria before,” emphasizing that the supporters of Obi, popularly known as the ‘Obidients,’ are ready to stand against such actions.

The warning from Charly Boy reflects growing tensions between government actions and opposition voices, where he cautioned, “Tinubu’s government must trend with caution not to set this nation on fire with an illegal arrest of HE Peter Obi. We call on Tinubu’s government to desist from her evil plans against Peter Obi because Nigeria will not remain the same.”
Other X users responded to Charly Boy’s tweet declaring support for Mr Obi and a dare to the Tinubu administration.
“it would be a waste of time and resources to arrest Peter Obi. If he breaks any law or intends to and he’s found guilty. He’ll arrested, and prosecuted. Heaven will not fall,” @nothindome wrote.
Others echoed his sentiment.

Obi is not at fault in any way. He is being too kind in his role as the opposition. Any attempt by the government to silence him will only lead to more resistance against the illegitimate government. They are aware of the consequences of going against Obi and are currently…

The only bond currently holding Nigeria together as a country is Peter Obi @PeterObi and the leadership that he brings.
No one should test the patience and will of the people.

The controversy gains further complexity from recent accusations by the Works Minister, Dave Umahi, who claimed that Obi was inciting the Igbo against Tinubu, particularly criticising the government’s handling of major infrastructure projects like the multi-trillion dollar coastal road amid severe economic challenges.
