Must read

LAGOS, Nigeria — Passengers and airline operators fled in panic from Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, following a fire that broke out in the basement of the building on Wednesday, September 6, 2023.

The smoke was first reported at approximately 7:50 a.m. local time, prompting an immediate response from firefighters at the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, ARFFS, of the airport.

According to Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, the situation was swiftly controlled.

“Promptly responding to the situation, the dedicated firefighters from the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services initiated immediate action,” said Yakubu-Funtua.

“Their swift response and professional efforts have successfully controlled the situation.”

As a precautionary measure, the Terminal building was evacuated to ensure the safety of passengers, staff, and other airport users due to the permeation of smoke in some areas.

“We are pleased to report that the situation is presently under control,” Yakubu-Funtua continued.

“Following our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of passengers, staff, and all airport users, the Terminal building was promptly evacuated.”

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, FAAN reassured the public that it remains committed to its core values of safety, security, and comfort.

The fire incident has ignited concerns over safety protocols and emergency response times at Nigerian airports, which have long been criticized for lacking in various aspects.

“Nigeria’s aviation industry needs to step up its game, especially regarding safety measures,” said Uche Okonkwo, a frequent traveler who was present during the incident.

“Today could have been a catastrophe if not for the quick response from the firefighters.”

Despite the prompt response, the incident is likely to prompt a review of safety measures in place, not just at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport but at airports across the nation.

“It was an eye-opener for sure,” added another passenger, Amaka Njoku. “Now more than ever, it’s clear that nothing should be left to chance when it comes to the safety of the flying public.”

The Murtala Muhammed International Airport is one of the busiest airports in West Africa, serving as a critical hub for both domestic and international flights.

This incident adds to a growing list of concerns, including infrastructure, that authorities will need to address to ensure public confidence in the country’s aviation sector.
