A 23-year old Daniel Webster and a 24-year old Niall Martin were captured by a CCTV camera pushing a 31-year old blind and deaf man on to a railway track at Chelmsford railway station in Essex after some issues with his brother who they also did same to.
The blind and deaf man couldn’t work for six months due to the severity of the injuries he sustained during the attack which eventually made him limp after using crutches for a month and half.
The perpetrators of the act were arraigned by the Chelmsford Crown Court by a judge, Judge David Turner QC who described such an act as disgraceful and dangerous.
The court sentenced Webster to 22 months jail term for Actual Bodily Harm (ABH) and Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) against the two brothers which he admitted whereas Martin got a sentence for nine months imprisonment for ABH on the 28-year old brother of the blind victim although he was released soon having already been in custody for five months.
According to Metro UK reports, while passing the sentence, the judge said, ‘This is exactly the sort of thing that terrifies members of the travelling public late at night,”.
According to Det Con Alan Reed from British Transport Police the duo displayed a “savage disregard for their victims”.
He added: “This is one of the most appalling incidents I have investigated.
“It is no exaggeration to say the brothers could have been killed after being thrown onto the tracks.
“I hope the sentence will provide them with some sense of closure, although in truth, the impact this has had on both of them is likely to remain with them for the rest of their lives.”
