ABUJA, Nigeria — The Centre for Crisis Communication, CCC, has raised red flags over critical issues it considers significant threats to Nigeria’s stability.
During a press briefing on Sunday, October 27, 2024, led by its chairman Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade (Rtd.), the CCC urged swift and transparent responses from authorities to address the interconnected challenges to Nigeria’s unity and security.
The organisation pointed out a Supreme Court case questioning the legality of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, rumours surrounding the Chief of Army Staff’s health, and intensifying ethno-religious tensions on social media.
Legal Battle Over EFCC’s Legitimacy Raises Anti-Corruption Concerns
At the heart of CCC’s warnings is an ongoing legal challenge led by state governors and activists, which argues that the EFCC’s formation violated Nigeria’s constitution.
According to the CCC, if successful, this case could nullify the anti-corruption agency’s authority and jeopardise gains made in fighting financial crimes.
“The attempt to weaken the EFCC through legal technicalities could trigger widespread social unrest due to unchecked elite corruption,” Maj. Gen. Olukolade stated that the EFCC Act of 2004 is crucial in tackling money laundering, fraud, and cybercrime.
The CCC cautioned that weakening the agency could threaten Nigeria’s economic and social stability.
Health Concerns Surrounding Army Chief Spark Public Mistrust
The CCC also addressed widespread speculation about the health of Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, noting the negative effects of inadequate transparency.
A lack of official updates has fueled public curiosity and concern, resulting in rumours and misinformation that could destabilise public trust.
“It is essential for officials to manage health information transparently to avoid unnecessary speculation and public anxiety,” Olukolade advised, underscoring the need for clarity regarding public officials’ health to sustain public confidence.
Social Media’s Role in Fomenting Ethno-Religious Tensions
As social media increasingly becomes a platform for inflammatory content, the CCC flagged its potential to incite real-world violence and erode social cohesion.
Citing recent ethno-religious tensions online, the CCC urged the government to take decisive action to prevent divisive rhetoric from escalating.
“Social media has become a flashpoint for divisive rhetoric. Urgent government intervention is required to prevent potential violence,” Olukolade warned, advocating for inclusive dialogue and education to reinforce Nigeria’s unity.
CCC’s Call for Immediate Government Action
Concluding its briefing, the CCC urged the government to implement proactive measures, emphasizing that early intervention is critical to preventing broader national crises.
Olukolade’s reminder, “A stitch in time saves nine,” captured the organisation’s call for prompt, coordinated efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s stability.
The CCC’s briefing underscores the urgent need for unity among Nigerian leaders and citizens to confront the complex challenges threatening the nation’s peace and security.
