WARRI, Nigeria – The Catholic Diocese of Warri, Delta State, has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from priestly duties following allegations that he entered into marriage in the United States.
In a statement titled “Decree of Suspension” issued on Thursday, January 16, 2025, and signed by Bishop Anthony Ovayero Ewherido and the Diocese’s Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Clement Abobo, the church confirmed the suspension of Fr. Oghenerukevwe.

Secret Marriage Sparks Action
According to the statement, Fr. Oghenerukevwe married Ms. Dora Chichah on December 29, 2024, at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, Texas.
Footage of the ceremony circulated widely on social media, prompting the Diocese to act.
“By this action, Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe has incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension in accordance with the provisions of Canon 1394 §1,” Bishop Ewherido stated.
The suspension bars Fr. Oghenerukevwe from exercising any sacred ministry and prohibits him from presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity.
Request for Release Not Completed
The Diocese revealed that prior to the marriage, Fr. Oghenerukevwe had submitted a request on November 30, 2024, to be released from all canonical obligations associated with Holy Orders.
However, the Diocese noted that he did not complete the required procedures before proceeding with the marriage.
“We reached out to him, asking for the necessary documentation to begin the process, but he went ahead to marry without following due process,” the statement said.

Canonical Implications
Under Canon Law, the marriage violates church rules requiring celibacy among Catholic priests, resulting in an automatic suspension.
Canon 1333 further outlines the restrictions placed on priests under suspension, including prohibitions on performing sacraments and other sacred functions.
Fr. Oghenerukevwe retains the right to petition for the revocation or amendment of the decree, provided he demonstrates a willingness to reform.
Church’s Message
The Diocese expressed hope for reconciliation, stating: “May God grant him the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation.”
