18-Year-Old Man Receives 12 Strokes Of Cane For Stealing Laptops And Phones

An 18-year-old butcher was today, Wednesday, February 25, 2015 arraigned before an FCT Area Court in Lugbe, Abuja for allegedly stealing two laptops and two mobile phones.

The defendant, Abba Ibrahim from Kabusa Village, Abuja, received a three-count charge of joint act, house breaking and theft.

He pleaded guilty to all the three counts and was thereafter sentenced to receive 12 strokes of cane after he pleaded with the court to `tamper justice with mercy’.

The Senior Judge, of the court, Mr Gambo Garba, while ruling the case, ordered that the accused be flogged 12 strokes of the cane for the offence.

He disclosed that the punishment was made lesser because the defendant immediately owned up to committing the crime.

Garba, according to Vanguard warned the convict to be of good behaviour and desist from crimes, discharged him and ordered that the recovered items be returned to the owner.

Earlier in the court, the prosecuting counsel, Paul Anigbo disclosed that two persons including Ndukire Okezuo and Etiaka Blessing caught the accused on February 9, 2015 and handed him over to officials at the Lugbe Police Station.

The prosecutor further added that the defendant had on the fateful day, connived with one Yusuf Mohammed and broke into the complainants’ house and stole two laptops, one Nokia phone and one Blackberry phone valued at N265, 000.

Meanwhile, Mohammed is yet to be found as he fled after the incident and has since been on the run.
