A building under construction belonging to a private secondary school at Igoba community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State collapsed on Thursday, May 9, 2014 leaving two dead and 3 others seriously injured.
An eyewitness Mr Abiodun Sunday, said the loud noise coming from the direction of the building attracted the neighbours to the scene only to find out that the building had collapsed and the victims were labourers working in the uncompleted building.
The state commissioner for housing and urban development, Bade Omoloja said, “This is a total calamity due to the loss of life. This building had no approval to begin with because our men at the task force unit of the ministry have been here on two different occasions to stop work. Obviously, very poor quality of work was carried out at the site.
“There are so many buildings outside here that don’t have approvals,” he said
Also speaking on the incident, commissioner for works, Mr. Adegboye Adegbenro, stated that it was a structural failure that caused the collapse
The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), State Security Services (SS) and the Red Cross Society of Nigeria all arrived the site to assist with the rescue mission.
