Aisha Buhari, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 hosted a lavish banquet to mark the end of the year for a group of Nigerian youths tagged: ‘Social Media Change Agents’.
Top social media personalities graced the lavish event that was held at the Banquet hall of the presidential villa.
The event is coming at a time of biting economic hardship and a protracted nationwide fuel scarcity that has seen Nigerians spending minimum of nine hours daily in fuel queues.

Curiously, as the banquet was holding at the Aso Rock presidential seat of power, Nigeria was crashing down from its number three position in a CNN projection of the world’s fastest growing economies. In January 2015, CNN had stated that Nigeria will be among the top three fastest growing economies in 2015 after China and Qatar. By December 2015, Nigeria had crashed out of the list of the world’s top 5 fastest growing economies.
Reacting to the severe economic hardship that was hitting Nigeria hard, President Buhari on Tuesday in his 2016 budget presentation said he could feel the pains of Nigerians. “I know the state of our economy is a source of concern for many. This has been further worsened by the unbridled corruption and security challenges we have faced in the last few years”, he said.
The Aisha Buhari banquet has provoked mixed reactions from Nigerians. Some say it was a waste of Nigeria’s resources on youths who were used and dumped after elections by Buhari’s government.
Others say it is a ‘recognition’ well-deserved.
