Following the protracted protest by the national female football team, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the immediate payment of all entitlements due to the Super Falcons, record winners of the African Women Championship, possibly putting this episode of embarrassment for the national to an end.
Abba Kyari, chief of staff to the president, disclosed this to journalists on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 saying Buhari summoned Solomon Dalung, minister of sports, and Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, over the saga.
Kyari, who is a source of national embarrassment as well, had earlier received the protesting players at Aso Rock gate.
“The problem has been resolved. They have done us proud and we congratulated them,” Kayri told State House correspondents.
“The ministries of sport and finance have been ordered to pay them tomorrow. I don’t know the details of the arrears but they have been directed to pay.”
The Super Falcons won the African football cup in Cameroon a fortnight ago. But on return home, the sportswomen were abandoned and none of their allowances or bonuses were paid. The footballers refused to leave their hotel in Abuja and handover the trophy to the Nigeria Football Federation unless their allowances were paid.
The Super Falcons staged a peaceful protest to the National Assembly on Wednesday morning over their unpaid allowances.
