An election petition tribunal sitting in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, set up for the senatorial election in Kogi West Senatorial district has sacked Dino Melaye of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, according to Vanguard.
The 3-man panel led by Justice Justice A. O. Chijioke in a unanimous judgment on Friday, August 23, accepted APC’s candidate, Senator Smart Adeyemi’s ground and ordered for reelection into the senatorial axis.
Melaye had been declared winner of the February 23 election by Nigeria’s electoral commission, INEC.
Displeased by the result, Adeyemi went to the tribunal to challenge Melaye’s victory citing, irregularities, overvoting and non compliance with the electoral acts.
Melaye had defeated Adeyemi, a former Senator representing the district in 2015 before being declared winner again in 2019.
