UPDATE: Dr. Austin Tam-George, the erstwhile Rivers State commissioner of information and communications, on telephone confirmed his resignation to The Trent.
“I wish to resign my appointment as Commissioner for Information and Communication with effect from today, June 23, 2017,” his brief resignation letter to Governor Nyesom Wike, which was obtained by The Trent on Friday.
“I have handed over officially to the director of administration of the ministry.”
“Thank for the opportunity to serve the state,” he added.
The former commissioner is also the executive director of the Institute of Communication and Corporate Studies based in Lagos. He holds a Ph.D. from University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa.
Tam-George’s sudden resignation comes less than 24-hours after Governor Wike sacked Bathuel Harrison, the state’s commissioner of works. In a statement, signed by a media aide to the Rivers governor, Simeon Nwakaudu, the sack of Harrison was with “immediate effect”.

According to a source with intimate knowledge of the situation, Dr. Tam-George, dropped his resignation letter with Governor Wike at about 1pm on Friday, June 23, 2017 in a move that “surprised even close friends”.
“No reason was given for his resignation in the letter,” the source in the Rivers State Government House told The Trent.
Efforts to reach Tam-George for comment were futile. According to a source, he had taken a flight to Lagos and was “still airborne”.
