President Jonathan had in the afternoon of Tuesday, November 4, 2014, confirmed Suleiman Abba, as substantive Inspector General of Police.
According to Reuben Abati, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Goodluck Jonathan, the confirmation took place during the council of states meeting in Abuja.

Also, President Jonathan had gone to the council of state meeting in the company of a former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.

Earlier in the year, precisely on Thursday, July 31, 2014, Suleiman Abba, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police was conferred the post of the acting Inspector-General of Police by President Goodluck Jonathan.
AIG Abba, currently the Assistant Inspector General of Police and assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, comprising Abuja, Kaduna and Niger states, replaces the incumbent Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, who proceeds on statutory retirement today having completed 35 years in service.
The newly named Inspector-General is a lawyer from Jigawa State and is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies.
He was formerly an Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, FCT Command and also a Deputy Force Secretary, and Commissioner of Police, Rivers State.
